Heavy Rainfall, Not Cloudburst, Leads to Tourist Evacuation at Raigad Fort

Raigad, Maharashtra - Contrary to initial reports, authorities have clarified that there was no cloudburst at Raigad Fort today, July 8th, 2024. However, the historic fort did experience intense rainfall that caused flash floods and stranded several tourists and trekkers.

Videos circulating on social media showed dramatic scenes of people wading through water and clinging to fort walls for safety. Thankfully, the Raigad police and district administration promptly launched a rescue operation, evacuating all visitors to safety.

"There was heavy rainfall in the area, but not a cloudburst," a district official confirmed. The surrounding areas of Mhasala, Srivardhan, and Mahad tehsils also received significant rainfall.

As a precaution, the Raigad Fort will be closed to tourists and trekkers until July 31st. The ropeway service, however, will remain operational for those needing to access the area for essential purposes.
