Malvani fish curry

 Ingredients:

  • 500g fish, cleaned and cut into pieces
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tomato, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup grated coconut
  • 4-5 garlic cloves
  • 1-inch ginger
  • 2-3 green chilies
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala powder
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1-2 dried red chilies
  • A few curry leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for cooking
  • Water as required

Instructions:

1. Grind the grated coconut, garlic, ginger, and green chilies together to form a smooth paste. Keep it aside.
2. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Once they start to splutter, add dried red chilies and curry leaves.
3. Add chopped onion and sauté until it turns translucent.
4. Add the chopped tomato and cook until it becomes soft and mushy.
5. Add the ground coconut paste and all the spice powders (turmeric, red chili, coriander, cumin, and garam masala) to the pan. Mix well and cook for a few minutes until the raw smell of the spices goes away.
6. Add water as required to get the desired consistency of the curry. Mix well and bring it to a boil.
7. Add the fish pieces to the curry and gently stir it to coat the fish with the gravy. Cover the pan and simmer for 10-15 minutes until the fish is cooked through.
8. Once the fish is cooked, turn off the heat and let the curry rest for a few minutes before serving.
9. Serve hot with steamed rice or bread.
