10 Oldest Railway Station Of Mumbai

The Mumbai Suburban Railway is the first railway to be built During British Rule, and is also the oldest railway system in Asia. The first train ran on 16 April 1853 between VT and Thane, a distance of 34 km, the 14-coach train took 1.25 hr to complete the 34 km journey. There has been regular development in Bombay but since 1991, it has been expanded rapidly.

Following is the list of 10 oldest railway station build in Mumbai (Bombay):

1. Bori Bundar (Then VT , Now CST)

Bori Bandar was one of the first railway station whose construction started in the year 1848, took 5 years to start railway first service. From time to time it was renamed. It was renamed as Victoria terminus and then chhatrapati shivaji terminus.

2. Tannah (Now Thane)

Its construction started few months after the construction of Bori Bandar. In 1853, the first train ran from Bori bundar to Thane. Now Thane is one of the busiest Railway station in Mumbai.

3. Sion

In 1853 when first train started from Bori Bandar there was a halt at Sion to refill the train’s water tanks because distance from Bori Bandar to thane was 34 K.M. So this station was also started in 1853 only.

4. Callian (Now Kalyan)

The portion of the line from Thane to Callian (present day Kalyan) was opened on May 1, 1854. the construction of this portion was difficult as it involved a two-line viaduct over the estuary and two tunnels.

5. Campoolie (Now Khopoli)

On May 12, 1856 the line was extended to Khopoli via Padusdhurree (present day Palasdhari).

6. Churchgate

Churchgate station gets its name from Church Gate street which is on the immediate south of the station. This is the first station of the Western Railway suburban network of Mumbai. It started in the 1860.

7. Colaba

Western line further extended towards Colaba in 1872, and goods shed was built there. In year 1896, a brand new station was established at Colaba to serve as terminus for both passenger and suburban lines. From the midnight of 31 December, Colaba, ceased to be a terminus.

8. Dadar

Dadar station is one of the Oldest Station& the busiest stations in Mumbai. This connects Western railway, Central railway together it was established in the year 1968.

9. Mahalaxmi

Mahalaxmi station was established in 1867. On 5 January 1928 Mahalaxmi station welcomed guests for the ceremony for the electrification of the Western Line. Renovation was carried out in 1926 and the station was reopened on 3 October 1926.

10. Bombay Central (Now Mumbai Central)

Bombay central station was started on 18 December 1930. it was made because of insufficient space at Colaba-Ballard Pier Railway Station. Now it renamed as Mumbai central railway station.
