Konkan Railway Hit by Landslide

Unseasonal rains in Maharashtra's coastal district of Ratnagiri have brought the Konkan Railway, a vital transportation artery for the region, to a standstill. A massive landslide that occurred around 6:30 p.m. between Veravali and Vilavade stations has severely disrupted rail traffic, leaving thousands of passengers stranded and railway operations in disarray.

According to railway officials, the landslide has blocked tracks on a crucial stretch of the Konkan Railway line, halting trains at various locations along the route. Restoration work began immediately but has been severely hampered by the continuing downpour. Crews are working round-the-clock to clear the debris and assess structural damage, but progress has been slow due be to the incessant rain and treacherous terrain.

“The landslide has had a significant impact on our operations. Our teams are on-site, working tirelessly to restore the route, but the weather is posing a serious challenge,” said a senior official from Konkan Railway.

Passengers on board the affected trains and at halted stations are facing considerable hardship. Many were forced to spend the night at local stations due to delays and route blockages. In response, railway authorities have mobilized resources to provide food, water, and assistance to those stranded.

The Konkan Railway, which serves as a critical link between Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka, is especially vital for the transportation of goods and passengers along India’s western coastline. With traffic brought to a grinding halt, both commuters and businesses are feeling the ripple effects of the disruption.

Emergency crack removal and track clearance operations are being conducted on a war footing. Heavy machinery and manpower have been deployed to the affected area, and the situation is being closely monitored by senior railway officials.

Authorities have urged passengers to check the status of their trains before starting their journey and assured the public that all necessary steps are being taken to restore services at the earliest.

As weather forecasts predict continued rainfall in the region, the Konkan Railway Corporation has issued advisories and remains on high alert. Further updates are expected as the restoration efforts progress.
