Rajkummar Rao's Newton Becomes India's First Official Entry To The Oscars 2018


It's raining awards for Rajkummar Rao and Pankaj Tripathi's Newton. The film which released today has been chosen as India's first official entry to the Oscars. Newton already had its world premiere in the Forum section of the 67th Berlin International Film Festival and then it had its North American premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival where it was screened in the International Narrative Competition section.


The film also won the ‘Jury Prize’ for ‘Best Film’ at the prestigious ‘Hong Kong International Film Festival’ and it won the International Federation of Art Cinemas (CICAE) award in its Forum segment at  67th Berlin Film Festival, where it had its premiere. 

Bollywood's Newton AKA Rajkummar Rao took to Twitter to share this news with the world. He tweeted, 

The film is a satirical comedy that revolves around the life of Newton Kumar, a rookie government clerk is sent on election duty to a Naxal-controlled town in the conflict-ridden jungles of Chhattisgarh, India. The film that progresses by showing how Newton faces all odds against him that includes apathy of security forces and the looming fear of guerrilla attacks by communist rebels and how he manages to conduct free and fair voting. 

The 90th Academy Awards, presented by Jimmy Kimmel, is scheduled to take place on March 4, 2018, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California.
